We have been nominated for the Liebster Award by the Barefoot Backpackers! The Liebster Award was created in order to promote new blogs and support the growing blogging community. Once nominated, you are asked to answer a few questions about yourself and your blog, then nominate another few blogs. We’ve actually been nominated a few times but never got around to doing a blog post about it – it’s finally time!
Our nominators, the Barefoot Backpackers , are a lovely American couple who quit their jobs and are now travelling the world on a budget. Head to their website and socials for some great tips on budget travel as well as helpful articles on the destinations they’ve been so far including Japan, China, Ireland and Greece! Their Liebster Award article answering their questions can be found here.
Thankyou for nominating us guys! Here are our answers to your questions:
What inspired you to create your blog?
I (Clare) originally created a blog when I went to Africa back in 2013. I went to volunteer at Harnas Wildlife Foundation in Namibia and wanted to keep my family and friends up to date with what I was doing through more than just photos on Facebook. I had always enjoyed writing and people enjoyed hearing about our travels, so I figured it was a way to get it all down on paper so I didn’t have to tell the stories in 10 different emails! As James and I did more and more travel together I kept up the blogging and decided to focus on our travels together as our major niche. Now I do the majority of the writing and manage our social media whilst James does the majority of the photography and helps brainstorm topics to write about!
How do you think you differ from other bloggers in your niche?
Our niche is couple travel. We are quite young compared to many other couples in our niche (early-mid 20s), especially considering we have been together for 9 years. Our blog has a definite focus on Asia, predominantly South East Asia (which is quite common) although we also have a fair amount of information and blogs on volunteering (and more to come) which is quite unique!
What are a few goals you have for the next 5 years?
We have a lot of goals for the next 5 years and not all are travel based!
Our goal for 2018 is buying our own home. This is quite a difficult thing to do where we live as real estate is insanely expensive. We have been saving intensely for just over a year and now have our finances sorted, we just have to find a home we want!
Our travels goals are quite broad. We’d like to travel to countries outside of Asia together as that’s the only continent we’ve been to together. In the next 5 years we’d love to do a 6-12 month trip to Europe, the Middle East and/or South America – we just need to save the money to do so!
Where is your next travel destination and why?
Our very next trip away is to the Gold Coast however that’s just to see family for a weekend. My next major trip is a huge opportunity I just couldn’t resist. I’m heading to the USA in August as a nanny for a family I babysit for! We are going to the West Coast for 2 weeks and I’ll be helping the parents look after their 4 children whilst they attend a couple of events. Although the USA has never been a destination very high on my list, I’m still super excited and can’t wait to go! Unfortunately this means James and I won’t get a big trip together this year however we are planning on heading somewhere in Australia for a week or so for a little getaway.
What is your least favorite thing about traveling and why?
We actually sat here thinking about this for ages. The long bus trips has got to be our least favorite thing. Our worst bus trip would have to be the 12 hour bus trip from Luang Prabang to Phonsavan. We had a crazy, reckless bus driver driving through the winding mountainous roads of Laos and we both felt so ill! We are amazed we didn’t crash and were so thankful to finally arrive and put our feet on solid ground again. There was a few bus trips in Vietnam, Cambodia, Nepal and Myanmar that weren’t great either – think breakdowns, no air-conditioning, flat tyres, being squished next to sick children, loud karaoke at 3am and sitting in the isles with stinky food all around you.
What is a quote you live by and what does it mean to you?
“You become what you think about. If you think in negative terms, you will get negative results. If you think in positive terms, you will achieve positive results” – Earl Nightingale
We just love this quote and it is something we really try to remind ourselves about regularly. We see so many people trying to do things whilst thinking “I can’t do this” or “This is too hard”. You will never get anywhere if you think negatively. Positivity does incredible things for your motivation, productivity and ultimately your success!
How did you come up with your blog name?
My old Blogger blog was called Wandering Clare. Upon migrating to WordPress and re-launching my blog I wanted to take “Clare” out of the name to include James and give us more flexibility. Every time we go on a new trip we say we are “off on another adventure”, so we started playing around with the word “adventure” and came up with Allured by Adventure. We definitely think it fits us well!
Now onto our nominations, questions, and the rules!
